Board Members -- July 2007 to June 2008

Bill Hughes, EdD, Chairman, served as an elementary school teacher, principal and Assistant Superintendent during his career. In addition to serving on the NWC Board, Bill does Dinner Deliveries and provides client transportation services. He is also very involved in volunteering in his church and the Interfaith Council.


Marty Silverman, Vice Chairman, has been a Sun Lakes resident for 12 years. He served on the New York City Board of Education for 40 years, where he also taught science and worked as a supervisor and administrator. Marty was the President of the Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation for 8 years, was a N.A.I.L.S. instructor, coached tennis at Corona Del Sol High School and was a science curriculum consultant for the Chandler School District.



Phil Hemberg, Secretary, worked for 36 years for a major aerospace company, where he served in a variety of management positions. He also sold Real Estate, and worked in Medicare Claims systems for a national health insurance company. He holds a B.A. in Mathematics from U.C., Northridge. Phil has lived in Sun Lakes since April, 2002. Since joining NWC, Phil has served as editor of the Care Connection, and also provides transportation and minor repair services for our clients.


Bill Fitzke, Treasurer, worked for 12 years in accounting and office management; the following 26 years he was General Manager/CEO of agricultural cooperatives in the Midwest. During this time Bill was recipient of the "Good Neighbor Award," he retired in 2001. Bill currently serves church, state and local community organizations.


Pat Gaynor joined the Board in February 2005 and brings a wealth of business experience and a broad volunteer background to NWC. Pat is a Vice President in the Personal Banking division of Northern Trust Bank and also serves on the Chandler Chamber of Commerce Executive Women's Council. She holds a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Washington.


Joel Goldman is the President of Admiral Scrap Metal Company. He has lived in Sun Lakes for almost 10 years and is very active in the Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation. Joel has experience working on community issues and collaborating with local government and law enforcement to address those issues throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area.



Dr. Ed Lamers, DDS, is a graduate of the Marquette University School of Dentistry. He is a retired Army Colonel, who served in Europe, the US, and Asia. Ed also taught at the Oregon Health Sciences University School of Dentistry where he retired as an Associate Professor. He has been an NWC volunteer for several years doing minor repairs for our clients.


Nancy Shaw Sheridan, BA, served as the Executive Director of the Wallace Foundation before she retired in 1997. Nancy is well known in the East Valley as a founder and lifetime board member of the East Valley Child Crisis Center and longtime Advisory Board member for Save the Family Foundation of Arizona. She began advising Neighbors Who Care on fund raising issues in 1997.



Marlene Olson spent her working years as a national account relocation coordinator for a major moving company. Her social affiliations included The American Business Women’s Association, Kiwanis and Newcomers Club. Prior to joining the NWC board Marlene served as Team Leader for the Friendly Visiting client service.




Douglas Ballard, MA has been Planning and Development Director for the city of Chandler, AZ since November of 1994. Prior to coming to AZ, he served as Director of Development and Acting City Manager in Fort Pierce, FL and as Senior Program Coordinator for the Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission.



Pat Amica, MA, taught elementary school for 23 years in New York State. In Arizona, she ran a preschool in Chandler for 10 years before retiring. Pat is active in her church choir, volunteers at Gila Crossing Elementary School teaching reading, and is an assistant instructor for beginning level computer classes.



Allan Tull, BA, retired as a Division Manager – Network Engineering after 32 years with Southern New England Telephone, then consulted in Human Resources and alternative work programs. He also served a in a variety of capacities with AARP including their National Board of Directors Vice Chair, and Chair.


Jerry Rex, BA, retired from Farmer’s Insurance as a manager/director with their Business Insurance Division, after 30 years. Prior to Farmer’s, he spent 5 years with Safeco Insurance, following his service as a Naval Officer. Jerry is a Minor Repair volunteer with NWC, and volunteers with the Tempe Diablos for Spring Training
