Girl Scouts Project...

Neighbors Who Care ,Inc. (NWC) a non-profit organization serving the homebound in south Chandler and Sun Lakes has teamed up with Girl Scout Troop 585 for a community service project. According to Troop Leader, Julie Mitchell, "the girls were looking for a community service project where they would not only engage in service, but also have the opportunity to learn the value of being involved in one's community".

The troop has broken into three small groups and the groups have been paired with Neighbors Who Care clients. The girls visit their "grand friends" monthly. The project started in November. During the virst visit, the girls brought small memory trees to each client's house. The clients and girls talked about what they were thankful for, the girls wrote that information on paper leaves, and then attached the leaves to the tree. Aleda Sickles (pictured) noted that she was thankful for her wonderful husband Jack and Neighbors Who Care.

Girl Scout Troop 585 has seven members, they are: Adriana, Lindsey, Abby, Morgan, Brooke, Analisa and Allison. The girls range in age from 10 to 11 years of age; the Troop's leaders are Julie Mitchell and Melanie Guilbeau.

Founded in 1995, the mission of Neighbors Who Care is... to assist the elderly in our community to live in their own homes for as long as feasible and with as much pride, dignity, and independence as possible. "And being able to provide contact for our clients with the larger community through this project with the girl scouts is very exciting," noted Chris Stage, Executive Director of Neighbors Who Care. "Troop 585 should be commended for not just thinking about community service but for thinking about a project that will build lasting connections and possibly blossom into continuing friendships."
